Tips for Hard Keepers

Some horses need a little extra support to hold their weight. These steps may seem simple, but they can make a big difference in how well your horse uses the nutrition you feed.

1️⃣ Schedule regular dental checkups
Have your horse’s teeth evaluated by a trusted equine dental specialist at least once a year. Even small issues like an overbite or underbite can lead to sharp points or uneven wear. These problems can make chewing uncomfortable, reduce appetite, or limit how well your horse grinds feed. When food isn’t chewed properly, the digestive system can’t extract as many nutrients, which often leaves horses looking ribby no matter how much they eat.

2️⃣ Keep forage available around the clock
Horses are designed to graze throughout the day and night. If their stomach is empty for long stretches, it can trigger ulcers or anxiety. Both are common reasons a horse may struggle to keep weight on. Consistent access to hay or pasture is one of the most important things you can do for a hard keeper.

3️⃣ Add a little alfalfa
If your horse already has hay or pasture available 24/7 and their teeth are in good shape, try including some alfalfa in the diet. Even a few pounds twice a day on top of their grass forage can provide extra calories and help improve body condition.

4️⃣ Do a "Gut Check"
Stress takes a toll on both appetite and digestion. Training, hauling, stall time, missing pasture buddies, or recovering from illness or medications can all throw off the balance of microbes in the hindgut. Since these microbes are key to turning fiber into usable energy, an imbalance can leave your horse looking thin even if they’re eating plenty. Supporting gut health during stressful times can make it easier for your horse to hold weight. Your horse may benefit from a daily probiotic boost or need a Hind Gut Rescue™ to get things back on track.
