We get it, every company has an omega-3 supplement. Even Bluebonnet has more than one! (Check out Omega +)
Of course, we’re going to tell you Rewind™ Joint is different…because it is! There are quite a few forms of omega-3s, and they all work in different ways. Most omega-3 supplements rely on EPA and DHA, which are great at maintaining everyday wellness, but not as effective at supporting the body's natural response to clearing inflammation compared to the active omega-3 in Rewind™ Joint.
Rewind™ contains a unique omega 3 fatty acid called Ecosateteranaoic Acid (ETA) that is sourced from New Zealand Green Lipped Mussels. It is very effective at naturally preventing inflammation. Reducing inflammation in arthritic or overworked joints can improve range of motion and stride length. You can read more about those studies further down.
To learn about other forms of omega-3s (ETA, ALA, EPA and DHA) and the best time to use them, check out this blog post or listen to Feed Room Chemist, Episode 13 - Omega 3's.
The cause of most joint damage is inflammation from daily stresses such as stopping, turning, and running on hard or deep ground. Normally this inflammation is so minor you cannot see it from the outside, but each day it compounds and creates more stress within the joint. Eventually the synovial fluid in the joint and the cartilage may begin to break down from the constant exposure to this low grade inflammation.
The best way to help prevent long term damage to the horse's joints is to support the body's natural effort to clear and manage this normal daily inflammatory cascade. Rewind™ Joint’s lipid extract, from the New Zealand green-lipped mussel, contains the omega 3 fatty acid chain ETA (Eicosatetraenoic Acid). Without getting too deep in the science, ETA is effective in inhibiting inflammatory pathways including 5-lipoxygenase and cyclo-oxygenase pathways responsible for production of eicosanoids, including leukotrienes and prostaglandins. In contrast to pro-inflammatory eicosanoids, lipoxins act as “braking signals” in inflammation. Lipoxins therefore act as the body’s own anti-inflammatories which switch off the inflammation process. In short, ETA can act as precursors of lipoxins therefore offer a highly potent and safe anti-inflammatory mechanism.

Not all mussels are created equal. We are using the best of the best in terms of potency and processing.
The key is about the efficacy of the ingredient. The processing method used for handling GLM (Perna canaliculus) can influence how well it works. Also, time and location of harvest are critical. Bluebonnet® sources GLM from a very specific location in the ocean, and it is harvested in a specific season of the year where the fatty acid profiles are the highest and most effective.
Trusting who you are buying from and their sourcing is really important! If a company is purchasing the same ingredient at a less potent time of the year, their cost could be lower, and products could be less potent.
We only use active ingredients backed by science, in research-proven amounts - and that applies to all our supplements. Effective feeding rate depends on what form of GLM is being used and how it was processed. Companies who use whole mussels that are dried down usually require larger doses. Bluebonnet® uses an active ingredient that was “Omni processed”, a production philosophy and method that captures and preserves the full suite of nutritive and bioactive compounds through coordinated, gentle processing stages rather than a single extraction step. This ensures higher potency which allows for lower inclusion.
The team of veterinarians/researchers we worked with when deciding on dosage suggested 1,000 mg as the level in which an effective response is noticed in humans, dogs, and horses. While doubling that dose may be helpful, it might not be "doubly" helpful, if that makes sense. There's a law of diminishing return, we just don't know exactly where that is yet. After being on the market for over a decade, we are confident in the rate we are using based on customer success.
Absolutely! The ingredients in Rewind™ Joint will not negatively impact the efficacy of prescription anti-inflammatory NSAIDs.
We always recommend consulting with your veterinarian before making changes to your drug protocol. While each horse is an individual and every case is different, many of our customers have had success reducing or eliminating NSAIDs within 8 to 12 weeks of being on Rewind™ Joint.
The recommended dose for an average adult horse is 2 scoops/day (a 148 cc scoop is included in the small pail). Studies show significant improvements at 4 weeks with increasing improvements at 8 weeks and 12 weeks. Since GLM needs time to build up in the body, we recommend using it daily for a MINIMUM of 4 weeks before attempting to reduce the amount of medications a horse is currently on, if any. After 12 weeks of daily use, most horses experience maximum improvement.
For particularly difficult cases or large breed horses, we recommend feeding 4 scoops/day. Smaller horses such as minis, ponies and yearlings may be fed at 1 scoop per day, but it is certainly safe to feed 2 scoops daily for extreme situations.
When feeding 2 scoops (180 grams) daily, many customers report improvement around 30 days. Consistent daily use is important. When fed at the recommended dose, clinical trials have shown significant improvement at 4 weeks and the highest level of observable improvement by 12 weeks.
It depends on your horse and goals. Are you comparing omegas, comparing joint support, or both? Together they are a super power and a great program for preventative maintenance - especially for horses in daily training. Need an expert’s input? Get connected with a nutrition consultant.

Although the name states “joint”, Rewind™ Joint is not limited to joint support. Because ETA omegas work through the body’s natural inflammatory response, it can support a healthy inflammatory balance throughout the entire body.
While many customers choose Rewind™ Joint for mobility and comfort support, we have also seen positive results in horses with other inflammation-related challenges, including seasonal allergies that present as skin or eye irritation.
For concerns beyond joint discomfort, we recommend working with your nutrition consultant and veterinarian to determine whether Rewind™ Joint is appropriate for your horse’s specific needs.
Rewind™ Joint is 100% drug-free and contains no prohibited substances. It is a nutritional supplement, not a medication, and is show-safe.

Ingredient efficacy is as important to us as it is to you. Bluebonnet® uses sound scientific research when formulating each product. From basic concepts to the finished product, our goal is to provide solutions that actually work.
Here’s what the most compelling research says Rewind™ Joint can do.
Rewind™ Joint is unique because it contains a specific omega-3 fatty acid chain (ETA), which is sourced from Perna canaliculus, also known as New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel. ETA is an incredibly potent anti-inflammatory because it helps the body generate lipoxin.
Lipoxins are compounds within the body used for controlling inflammation and promoting healing. In fact, researchers have found the use of ETA and its natural process of controlling inflammation to be more effective than non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen and aspirin). Studies show horses consuming ETA have improved range of motion in joints and less pain associated with arthritis.
One very beneficial aspect of ETA is that it utilizes the safe and beneficial COX-1 pathway to stop inflammation in the body. Only COX-1 enzymes produce prostaglandins that activate platelets and protect the stomach and intestinal lining. This is especially important because it means ETA will not cause ulcers or gastric hemorrhage which is a common side effect of anti-inflammatory drugs.
ETA is an effective natural alternative to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that won’t cause negative side effects such as ulcers.
Arthritis causes pain, reduced mobility, and reduced quality of life. Omega-3 supplements such as fish oil are often recommended as natural alternatives for reducing pain and inflammation. Rewind™ Joint has proven to be much more effective than fish oil in relieving joint pain.
In a research trial, the unique ingredient in Rewind™ Joint decreased pain associated with osteoarthritis by 89% over a 12 week period. A significant reduction of pain was observed at 4 weeks and then continued to decrease for 12 weeks. Fish oil did not provide significant pain relief at any point in the 12 week trial.
Figure Above - Pain assessment scores were significantly reduced after 4 weeks with continuous improvement during the 12 week period patients took P. canaliculus (Group A). Fish oil (Group B) did not reduce pain in osteoarthritic patients.
Horses with arthritis have significantly less pain when P. canaliculus is fed daily. Researchers found reductions in severity of lameness and improved response to joint flexion test compared to a placebo.
When the body is provided with tools to eliminate chronic low-grade inflammation on its own, there may be a reduced need for joint injections & drugs.
